José Avelino Gilles Corbett Lourenço is a writer and filmmaker who lives in Toronto with his adult wife, baby daughter, and adorably frail dog.

His most recent short film, ROMANCE LANGUAGE, was awarded a BravoFACT production grant and is now in post-production. Other current projects include a feature screenplay for Simon Kinberg's Genre Pictures at Fox, and his feature writing/directing debut, YOUNG WERTHER, with Mason Novick, Michelle Knudsen and Christina Piovesan producing.

His narrative work has been nominated for a Juno Award (Music Video of the Year), a Canadian Screen Award, and an International Emmy.

He has directed commercials for Audi, Acura, PepsiCo, and Cineplex, and has consulted on broadcast and online campaigns for brands including Apple, Nike, Mercedes, McDonald’s, Samsung and the NFL.

A graduate of McGill University, José’s career began in print journalism. He was a copy editor and columnist at the Toronto Star, after which he transitioned into broadcast television producing at MuchMusic and the CBC.

He continues to write fiction and personal journalism, but has been pretty lax about maintaining an online archive of this work.

Some of it is here, at McSweeney’s.
